“I meet the people who are left behind as the hectic television cameras from the first hour have left the disaster zone… and they tell me the most astonishing and magical stories. Their words not only show their grief, but also their wonderful spirit of survival – keep on steppin’!”

Marjoleine Boonstra, Photographer, in Keep on Steppin’

Interactive tablet app Keep on Steppin’ explores how people persevere in the aftermath of tragedy. Filmmaker and photographer Marjoleine Boonstra created five short films centering on areas ravaged by war or natural disaster—Afghanistan, Bosnia, New Orleans, and Uzbekistan. The films take a poetic, dream-like approach, combining animation and reflective voiceover with documentary photographs and video footage. Through the iPad app, audience members can watch the films in any order.

Keep on Steppin’ was designed as a cross-media project. In addition to the tablet app, Keep on Steppin’ includes a book, photography exhibition, and an interactive website. Boonstra’s films have also been broadcast on television.
