“The Block has always been talked about in the media from an outsider’s perspective. No one has spent a prolonged period of time there.”

Sandra Fonseca, Researcher, in SBS

Slated for demolition and redevelopment in 2010, the Redfern, New South Wales neighborhood known as “the Block” was one of Australia’s largest indigenous-owned housing projects for nearly 40 years. By the time a team of Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) filmmakers arrived to record the stories of the Block’s residents, only 11 remained.

The Block: Stories from a Meeting Place captures the history of the Block’s unique community through immersive 360° panoramic photographs and an interactive interface that re-creates the neighborhood’s streets, parks, and buildings. As visitors explore the online re-creation of the Block, they discover clickable hotspots that unlock video, photographs, interviews, timelines, oral histories, and other content. The SBS team developed the web documentary in collaboration with the Block’s residents, refining its themes and narratives with their guidance.
