_Appear.in

Appear.in lets you start a video conversation directly in your browser, without having to register or download/install anything.

The easiest way to talk over video

Telenor Digital AS

With appear.in you can start a video conversation with up to 8 people directly in your browser without having to register or download/install anything. You create a video room that has a custom name (e.g. appear.in/MITdocubase) and send the link to people. Once they click the link, they’ll join the conversation instantly in their browser. Inside a room you can share you screen, or send links in the text chat. You can also claim your own room if you want to use it as a regular meeting point.

appear.in is cross-platform, as it is based on WebRTC and thus works in all webRTC-supported browsers on desktop and Android, as well as on iOS with a native app. With the appear.in API you can generate or embed rooms on any webpage: developer.appear.in

You can use appear.in for meetings, remote working, teaching, monitoring or other use cases that require audio and video to be transmitted in real-time between multiple parties.

Appear.in is a web-based video chat program that seems to me like a great alternative to other popular video chatting applications. Skype is clunky and the download process takes too long, while Facetime is a preferred alternative, but only two people can use it at once, and only Mac users have access. I think the process of inviting other people to the chat by sending a short link that is provided by Appear.in, or that you can edit yourself, is very simple and inviting.
It’s very easy for multiple people to join the conversation, and I found that Appear.in works on many devices. Although a free app has to be downloaded on tablets or smart phones before they can join a chat, it was a fast download and they could quickly join an already established video chat.
The randomly-generated names of group chats prevent random people from joining in, but I like the added privacy that locking the chat provides. That’s one way to make a chat with up to eight people feel as safe and easy as a chat with two people. Facetime also lacks a text chat box, which is one of the bonuses of Skype, so I was pleased to see a chat box next to my video chat when using Appear.in. I would definitely consider making an account on Appear.in, because that gives you the ability to “own” a video chatroom with a certain name. I think that purpose would be helpful for small-business owners or other groups who regularly video chat. Using the same link every time would simplify the process even further.
One problem I had with Appear.in is that the audio quality didn’t seem to be as clear as with Facetime, but the image was clear, and the audio didn’t impede my use of the tool.
