In November 2015, The New York Times launched its virtual reality application “NYT VR,” distributed one million disposable Google cardboard VR headsets to its subscribers, and published its first 360 video: The Displaced.
In an observational documentary style, the 360 video tells the story of three displaced children: Oleg from Ukraine, Chuol from South Sudan, and Hana from Syria. The children allow us to become guests in their lives for a few minutes; they speak about how they escaped war zones, the memories of their homes, and their hopes for the future.The Displaced portrays the impact of war and displacement on children with heartbreaking, immersive realism.
The 360 video is a part of a multimedia project that also includes a feature story, interviews, and three photo essays. It is significant for being the first of many NYT VR projects to come, as well as the precursor of The New York Times’ Daily 360 Series.
