“As a woman working in virtual and augmented reality journalism, I am humbled to have been invited by Michelle Gabel to collaborate and create the more avant-garde vision for this intense and unbelievable story. I believe FACE TO FACE embodies a new genre of compassionate, non-fiction storytelling, and that it will leave an impact on every single guest.”
Michaela Holland, Co-author
Face to Face is an immersive documentary and multimedia installation that provides an intimate look at gun injuries and human resilience. The documentary tells the story of Michelle Fox, who lost her eyes, nose, and upper palate to a nearly-fatal shotgun wound in 2009. Photojournalist Michelle Gabel documented Fox’s story for four years, striving to find a way to tell Fox’s story. Virtual reality artist Michaela Holland joined Fox and Gabel to design this immersive documentary.
Face to Face utilizes years of photojournalism and audio interviews that work in tandem with virtual reality to form a three-act installation. Each room in the installation is based on spaces from Fox’s home: her living room (which is decorated with family photographs, kids’ drawings and pictures, and documents about her accident), her bathroom (which contains 3D-printed VR headsets designed to look like facial prosthetics), and her dining room (which contains a video of Fox addressing the viewer directly).
