“Breathing profoundly questions the notion that we are separate from the natural world we inhabit. There is no duality and the environment is not outside of  us, we live inside of it and it makes us who we are. In each inhalation a part of the atmosphere becomes me, and by exhaling I become part of the atmosphere.”

Diego Galafassi, Author, to Phi Centre

Breathe is a 20-minute multi-sensory interactive installation that uses body movement, gesture, and breath (through biometric sensors) to immerse participants in the story of air. Breathe invites you to experience an atmosphere of your own creation, recasting your ordinary daily experience of breathing as an immediate direct link to the complex living world we inhabit. It harnesses the power of Magic Leap technology to reconnect us to the world around us.

The installation uses Magic Leap devices, as well as a tailor-made breathing sensor, to make it a generative experience for 4-6 participants at a time. The physical environment includes textiles, concrete, living sculptures and video screens. During the experience, participants see their breathing in color and movement. Because of Breathe’s generative design, the experience is different with every run-through in response to participants’ breathing patterns.
