“We wanted to contribute a realistic, respectful look at birth, in a documentary piece that aims at being moving – but also useful. It is also an aknowledgement of midwives’ endeavours to provide the best care to women in childbirth.”

Àlex Badia, Producer, to Docubase

Birth in the 21st Century is an interactive web documentary that lets the viewer inside the delivery room of the state hospital of La Plana (in Vila-real, Spain), led by a team of midwives who specialize in respectful and humane childbirth. It follows the stories of five women during their pregnancy and childbirth, before and after the coronavirus crisis. The experience seeks to convey hospital management models for labor and birth that are based on the respect of women in childbirth: respect for their bodies, their babies, their rights and their wishes.

The website includes an interactive birth plan–a document where users can express their wishes and preferences–and short videos where the midwives explain the importance of the different choices offered.
