Video games are often viewed as simulation of reality. But sometimes I would rather see them as a kind of extended reality. Like other things or objects in the world, video games are artifacts that help to form and define what we may call reality. On this note, I think video games can be conceived less as a kind of symbolic parallel, but rather a direct extension of our everyday reality that warrants exploration and manipulation.

Another Day of Depression in Kowloon (九龍百哀圖) is a 15-minute video installation that investigates how Hong Kong is portrayed in a popular digital media format. By re-appropriating the map “KOWLOON” from the video game Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010), this project is a virtual field study, documentation, and digital portrait of a simulation of Hong Kong as depicted in a first-person shooter game.

In Another, IP Yuk-Yiu uses the real-time computer graphics from Call of Duty to create animation, and removes screen interfaces and characters that originally appear in the game to create an empty landscape that displaces the gameplay objectives usually found in first-person shooter games. Instead, participants take more of a meditative and observational position in the landscape, considering questions about cultural representations and post-colonial Hong Kong as understood through media.
