“The more the students work with the material, the more interesting it gets.”

Kurt Fendt, Director, in MIT HyperStudio

An experiment in interactive, hypermedia filmmaking, Berliner sehen creates a portrait of the city of Berlin through the eyes of its residents. The project’s interviewees discuss life in the city both before and after the Berlin Wall—dividing capitalist West Germany from communist East Germany—came down.

Berliner sehen lets the audience construct its own narrative by assembling short clips into a personal archive. The project allows for a non-linear experience, letting users browse videos by theme or interviewee, selecting ones relevant to their interests. Intended for use by German language students, Berliner sehen creates a “narrative network” that its audience can explore in any direction.
