“You cannot talk about any American city at a local level anymore without going beyond borders. How are you going to cover any community locally if you don’t look at it with a global scope and with international stories?”

Anayansi Diaz-Cortes, Creator, in  Current.org

Part of the Association of Independents in Radio (AIR)’s Localore initiative, Sonic Trace is an interactive storytelling project centered around the Latino immigrant experience in Los Angeles. Creator Anayansi Diaz-Cortes built on her experience in radio to develop an experimental recording process: instead of the handheld recorder, Diaz-Cortes and her team built a mobile recording pod (La Burbuja) with the help of a Kickstarter campaign and online design competition. Sonic Trace takes intergenerational stories from the Los Angeles Latino community to weave together local and global experiences.

The journey begins with a short introductory video, bringing the user to an interactive map of Los Angeles. Icons indicate where stories were recorded. While the map of Los Angeles locates the audience’s experience within a geographic community, the mobile recording studio is a reminder that stories extend past borders.
