With The Scream VR, we hope to offer viewers a brand-new experience, by transforming their museum visit into a journey into the heart of the emotions stirred up by this haunting artistic work.
David Bigiaoui, producer, to Venice Biennale
Based on Edvard Munch’s famous painting “The Scream”, The Scream VR is an interactive virtual reality experience that is part documentary, part exhibition and part sensory experience. In the experience, the user is able to touch the painting, learn about its history, and explore painter Edvard Munch’s obsessions and work. The virtual-reality experience unfolds in three chapters, presenting a unique interpretation of the Expressionist masterpiece.
The experience starts with the participant standing alone in a virtual museum, looking at the famous painting. The gallery is completely empty besides the painting. A narrator describes the history of the painting and the life of Edvard Munch while the painting and environment evolve through the different chapters, which include a volcano and fiery skies, ghoulish spirits circling darkened room, and a plain mirror in the same empty gallery.
