“Trolls vs Elves was born out of my growing concern over the pervasive influence of disinformation, particularly targeting vulnerable groups like Ukrainian refugees. I wanted to create an interactive experience that not only exposes these narratives but also empowers users to critically engage with them, offering a more immersive and impactful alternative to traditional fact-checking reports.”

Aleks Rydzkowska, Author of Trolls vs Elves for Docubase

Trolls vs Elves is a web-based interactive documentary exploring the disinformation narratives targeting Ukrainian refugees. Viewers can explore the topic from two contrasting angles: as Cyber Elves, little-known activists combating Russian disinformation, or as internet trolls fueling informational chaos. By choosing an elven ally or a mischievous troll, players dive into the world of fact-checking and disinformation tactics, gaining insights from their unique vantage points.

The user experience immerses participants in a dynamic blend of real-life footage, network analysis, and data visualization, encouraging a deeper understanding of the mechanisms behind disinformation campaigns. As players interact with the narrative, they explore the roots, strategies, and impact of digital manipulation, shedding light on how informational warfare shapes public perception both online and offline.

Through interactivity and a dual-perspective narrative structure, Trolls vs Elves not only informs but actively engages audiences in critical reflection on their personal and collective roles in resisting or perpetuating online misinformation.

Preservation Wishes

I want Trolls vs Elves to be remembered as an exploration of how interactive documentaries can be used to address misinformation. While the website may eventually be unavailable, the project will be preserved through research publications, articles, and audiovisual materials, ensuring that its core ideas remain accessible and continue to have an impact.
