“With “We Speak Their Names in Hushed Tones,” I want to shed light on another aspect of migration that’s often not talked about: family members of missing migrants. Beyond the photographs and videos of young Africans in orange vests being rescued at sea, I want us to see the waiting families of those migrants who’ve lost communication with one another. Through this project, I aim to open a door to their dreams, pains, and hopes. These migrants – missing and non-missing – are not just numbers; they are people with families waiting for their return someday.”

Following the stories of family members of missing migrants in Benin City, Nigeria, this project explores the psychological effect of the consequences of irregular migrations on families who are left clueless as to the whereabouts of their loved ones. Through the use virtual reality (6DoF non-linear narrative) and photography the audience will be immersed in the rooms of two family members as they narrate their pains, anxieties, fears, and unresolved hopes.
