“We want the creators from those communities to have a voice and be able to speak. Not have somebody from another community come in and tell their story.”
Loc Dao, Producer, in the New York Times
Artist Kevin Lee Burton grew up in God’s Lake Narrows, a First Nation reserve located in northern Manitoba. Now based in Winnipeg, over 1,000 km away, Burton returns yearly to his hometown. He collaborated with the National Film Board of Canada to create an interactive photo essay about the community, based on an exhibition he collaborated on with photographer Scott Benesiinaabandan.
God’s Lake Narrows opens by locating web visitors in relation to the reserve, mapping the distance between the audience member and God’s Lake Narrows, as well as the nearest First Nations reserve. As visitors explore God’s Lake Narrows, images of the community are interspersed with text from Burton. Benesiinaabandan’s photographs of home exteriors slowly transition into portraits of God’s Lake residents, a metaphorical opening of doors as visitors become more familiar with the community.
