“We wanted to look more outside the music industry and more at just the ways that music permeates the city, the way it’s happening in churches and living rooms and front porches.”
Delaney Hall, Producer, in Austinist
Branded as the “live music capital of the World,” Austin, Texas has a rich music scene that thrives outside of major venues or the famous South by Southwest music festival. The Austin Music Map shows a side of the city’s music scene that might otherwise be hidden to outsiders, from “secret shows” with Balkan brass bands to dive bars with vintage Juke Boxes.
Produced by Austin’s community radio station KUTX in affiliation with the Association of Independents in Radio (AIR)’s Localore initiative, the Austin Music Map tracks Austin’s music scene and maps its history. An interactive map interface acts both as a live-music video playlist and as exploratory journalism. Audience members can contribute any kind of media to the project; artists and musicians have added videos of performances and submitted stories of Austin’s music history.
