“We engage our audience by creating a different approach to the main story on our different platforms. Whereas the TV series tells the stories chronologically and outlines the historical context, the web platform zooms in on the emotional experience of the protagonists.”
Lena Thiele, Christian Beetz and Oliver Mille, Producers, in the Torino Film Lab
A companion to an award-winning TV miniseries of the same name, Farewell Comrades paints a portrait of the Soviet Union’s decline from the inside, covering the period from 1975 to 1991. While the television documentary has a sweeping historical and geographic scope, the Farewell Comrades interactive concentrates on one aspect of life under Communist rule—the postcards that people sent to each other. Web visitors can explore the history of Soviet decline by reading actual postcards. Video interviews with the people who sent and received them provide additional historical context. All content in Farewell Comrades is also sortable by map, topic, or through an interactive timeline.
