“Jan Bot in an exploration of AI’s aesthetic potential as it is available today in 2018. We see through an old film archive through the eyes of a new technology and, in doing this, we experience machine intelligence as it really is.”
Pablo Núñez Palma, Creator, to Docubase
Jan Bot is a filmmaking bot that combines archival footage and algorithms to generate experimental videos based on two ingredients: found footage and today’s trending topics. The found footage comes from automatically parsed media from Bits & Pieces, the EYE Filmmuseum’s collection of found footage. Jan Bot then pulls the day’s trending topics from Google Trends and uses natural language processing to select topically relevant footage to splice together the footage with custom intertitles, drawing from news snippets. The result is a computationally authored media experience which imagines how forgotten bits and pieces of the filmic past can be reinterpreted and repurposed to visualize contemporary buzz. At the end of a working day, Jan Bot selects its favorite film and publishes it on its social media accounts: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
