Placing its audience in the perspective of an investigator looking into the deaths of Chinese coal miners, Journey to the End of Coal has a first-person, choose-your-own-adventure format, drawing on techniques from video game platforms. An audience member’s choices affect the story as he or she travels deeper into the world of Chinese coal mining. A rich array of documentary multimedia—video, photographs, interviews—fills out the experience.
Produced by French production company HonkyTonk Films, Journey to the End of Coal premiered as a digital feature on the Le Monde website before screening at film festivals worldwide.
