“What we want to do now is to put the public at the center of the experience. The eight characters are there to reflect yourself, to position yourself and ask ‘What role do social networks play in my life?’”
Hugues Sweeney, Producer, in Press+1 Interview
Every generation gives rise to its own teenage subcultures as adolescents rebel, act out, and generally push the limits of their own identities. With the advent of online social networks, teens who might once have felt alone found others who shared their passions and particular countercultures at the click of a button. My Tribe is My Life examines the lives of eight young music fans who live rich social lives online when their offline peers see them as freaks, geeks, and loners. Visitors watch videos featuring the eight characters, enriched with quotes, questions, and statistics that supply an almost ethnographic vision of their online lives. Streaming music from a web radio station created for the project gives viewers access to the culture of the characters. A key part of the experience is the ability of visitors to create their own avatars and experience the thoughtful identity expression the site aims to examine, thus giving us a window into how we might place ourselves in the online social world.
