“Initially a simple documentary-style project titled Hunters and Heirs, [the project] has been given a whole new life by NFB, and is now known as The Last Hunt. The resulting interactive website and app take storytelling into new territory.”
Alexi Hobbs, Author, on his website
Every year, Antonio “Pit” Allard heads to the woods of Northern Quebec for his annual hunting trip. In The Last Hunt, his grandson accompanies him on the journey, documenting the quiet beauty of Pit’s retreat and reflecting on the reality that this trip may well be Pit’s last.
In a poignant interactive photo essay, project author Alexi Hobbs tells the story of his grandfather’s life in text and photographs taken on their shared hunting trip. A team from the National Film Board of Canada (NFB)’s Digital Studio artfully sew Hobbs’s materials together with drawings, animations, music, and interactions reminiscent of a story book. The project can be viewed as a website or a tablet app.
With this brief and simple interactive work, the team at NFB creates a profound meditation on life, nature, and family.
