“I’m sure my grandfather would like to be remembered for his sense of humor. But my wish is that his story helps us all to remember the toll of war and to use that memory to resist future wars.”

Stuart Campbell, Author

These Memories Won’t Last is an interactive webcomic by Stu Campbell about his World War II veteran grandfather who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease.

In the browser-based experience, the user navigates through the story by scrolling down on a seemingly endless white canvas. Beautiful line drawings depict stories of the grandfather’s dementia and how the author’s family handled the difficulties with humor and compassion. The form of the piece fittingly mimic a mind with memory disorder; scenes from present and World War II — to which the grandfather was drafted at the age of 21 — morph into each other. If the user decides to scroll back, s/he only finds a white cloud, where the stories used to reside. Gracefully accentuating the mood between playful and melancholic, the music score particularly adds to the emotional impact of the narrative.
