“The thing about documentary is we labor behind the scenes, and we’re very rarely seen by a general public.”

Pepita Ferrari, Director, in The Marketplace of Ideas

Capturing Reality: The Art of Documentary is the online companion to Pepita Ferrari’s 2008 film of the same name. Ferrari interviewed 38 documentarians to make the linear version of Capturing Reality, amassing hours of footage with filmmakers like Errol Morris, Werner Herzog, and Albert Maysles. Ferrari worked with interactive producer Steve Mackey and the National Film Board of Canada to create an interactive project showcasing the interviews that didn’t make it into her final cut. Web visitors can select any of the site’s 163 interview clips by clicking on a documentarian, or sorting by theme. Capturing Reality’s autoplay feature follows any clip with a related one, letting viewers sit back and listen to all the interviews with a particular filmmaker or to a specific topic.

The film version of Capturing Reality screened at the International Documentary Festival in Amsterdam (IDFA), while the website premiered at IDFA’s DocLab, one of the first festivals focused exclusively on new media storytelling.
